Professional Bio - Evelyn Sasmor

Evelyn Sasmor has over 20 years of experience in all areas of educational, scientific, technical, and medical publishing, covering all functional areas from editorial to back office. Most recently, she has focused on e-business, online product development, and digital content issues and enabling technologies.

Evelyn has worked extensively on standards that enable the publishing and media industries. She is one of the creators of the DOI (digital object identifier) and of the ONIX (ONline Information eXchange) standard. Evelyn chaired the Association of American Publishers (AAP) Enabling Technologies Committee and the U.S. ONIX Committee.

Before founding Sasmor Consulting, Evelyn was Vice President for McGraw-Hill Education. At McGraw-Hill, Evelyn was responsible for the strategy, development, and implementation of McGraw-Hill Education's e-business / e-publishing platform, content and digital asset management solutions, and the master product database that provided metadata to all trading partners and to all company Websites. Evelyn led the conception, design, and development of the premiere Internet services, Harrison's Online and AccessScience. Harrison's Online, based on the world's leading medical textbook, Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, was a ground-breaking new type of publishing that married the traditional encyclopedic medical textbook to journal-like daily updates, news, informational links, and online self-tests. AccessScience provides the online version of McGraw-Hill's encyclopedia of science and technology, a scientific dictionary, student activity centers, news, and biographies, all centered around major topical areas.

At Harcourt, Evelyn served as Senior Vice President and Head of the Academic Press journal company, responsible for the development, operation, and financial performance of the Academic Press journal publishing program, which included approximately 110 journals, covering a wide range of specialties in the life, behavioral, social, and physical sciences. Evelyn also served as Senior Vice President for production and operations, with complete responsibility for all production, editorial, manufacturing, and operational functions for approximately 350 books and 975 journal issues per year (over 300,000 pages per year). Areas covered included all aspects of publishing operations from contract management through distribution.

Evelyn has been a speaker at various publishing and educaton conferences and has been active in many industry activities, including:
